What it is guessing at
“Low” and “out” are estimates, worked out from the gaps between your own purchases — nothing is watching the shelf. The first guesses for a new item are wide and tighten as the record grows, a week with guests will empty the milk early anyway, and you can overrule any date. Ullage shows how sure it is rather than rounding it to a promise.
The questions people ask first
Do I need an account?
No. Your pantry is stored on the device you are using, and the whole app works offline. You attach an email address only if you want to share the shelf with the people you live with, or to get it back after a lost phone.
What do I have to do, and how often?
Walk the kitchen once and add what is on the shelves. After that, mark things bought when you shop — that is the whole job. You never have to tell Ullage how much of anything is left.
How does it know when something will run out?
From your own history and nothing else: Ullage keeps the gaps between the times you bought a thing and takes the middle one. The first guesses for a new item are wide and tighten as the record grows, and a date is always a guess rather than a promise — a week with guests will empty the milk early whatever the middle gap says. You can overrule any date.
Does it warn me before food goes off?
No. Ullage predicts how often you buy a thing, which is a different question from when a thing expires. It does not read expiry dates, and it does not plan meals.
How does sharing with my household work?
Everyone in the house sees the same shelf and the same list, so anyone can add a thing or mark it bought. Sharing uploads the shelf so the other phones can read and write it — that is the part of Ullage that is not local, and it happens only if you choose it.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Nothing in the app is time-limited, nothing is held back for a paid tier, and there is nothing to buy.
Can I get it on my phone?
The web app works in a phone browser today, and you can add it to your home screen. Native iPhone and Android apps are built but not yet in the App Store or on Google Play.
